Kirchoffer House
Linebox Studio realized the sustainable design with a beach house feel for Kirchoffer, an ideal family home in Ottawa.
Westboro is one of Ottawa’s most beautiful neighbourhoods. It is located off of the Ottawa River and the scenic Island Park drive. Known as a “thriving community with a lively street scene,’ it’s easy to see its overall appeal for all age groups to call home.
Kirchoffer is the closest home to the Westboro beach, with only a few minutes walking distance. The view was something that we wanted to maximize and design around. A family of four that moved to Ottawa after living in Australia, found the sweet spot in the neighbourhood. The original home, prior to being rebuilt was designed originally by the next door neighbor with a large part of the property being restricted to remain an open amenity area. The home design has high diagonal volumes in the back due to this restraint.
Inspired by technology and sustainable design, this was our first projects that included Tesla charging in the garage. This project was truly an incredible experience and process, as creativity was at the forefront. Some other components we integrated into the design are FSC rated lumber for all framing, LED lighting, triple glazed windows, natural ventilation that works with prevailing wind directions, passive solar heating, solar panels and the aim for LEED platinum. Another very unique feature to the home is the green roof that reduces storm water impact and increases insulation value.
The materiality and finishes were inspired by a beach house feel. This kept all of the finishes light and warm with large open windows and expansive views of the river. Following the views, there are a variety of spaces and experiences to enjoy outdoors. Some key areas are, a four season lounge that opens up to a surround deck and pool, a deck fire pit beyond bi-fold doors, and most importantly, a roof deck with a hot tub with stunning views of the river.
Considering the clients interest in high tech, the family has a media and games room in the basement along with a virtual reality space and a dedicated music room.
