Twin Cottages

Stokes architecture + design straddled between minimal and bohemian design to create a sense of space for a bayside cottage in Cape May, New Jersey.

  • Replacing 2 more modest cottages next to our Cape May Cottage, the twin cottages played off of the style of their neighbor to create a tight composition of bayside architecture. The two houses, also built over the cape may marina, were meant to be the same-but-different, with a playful interaction of exterior spaces and features.

Stokes also fully designed the interior of one of the cottages. The client wished to create a modern-minimal version of a bohemian surf shack. Stokes used a neutral palette and some selective color blocking to create interest and to separate spaces. Some custom furniture was designed by Stokes to tie together the rooms. White oak vanities in the bathrooms match the floors as well as the custom beds/headboards and storage units in the bedrooms. Other furniture was selected to straddle the line between minimal and bohemian.
