Darlinghurst Terrace House

Filled with minimalist design by Tom Mark Henry, a former run down three-storey terrace in Darlinghurst, Australia is pared back to its original features, and injected with contemporary details.

  • Year 2018
  • Location Darlinghurst, Australia,
  • Type House,
  • Although a significant intervention was needed to make the terrace habitable, particular care was taken to retain the original character of the building. The approach was to create a more functional floor plan, and pull natural light through the space.

We focused on the interplay of texture, combining hard and soft finishes, contrasting matte and gloss surfaces, and light and dark to create intrigue and depth in an otherwise monochromatic palette.

These quiet juxtapositions are an exercise in restraint, and the pursuit of balance and simplicity.

In such a light, monochromatic scheme we were careful not to use a cool white on the walls or joinery. In contrast to this, darkness of material like the new black stained timber stair case against the original sandstone walls adds an element of drama, combined with a relaxed, open plan interior.

The result is an open, light and uncluttered space where simplicity is the ultimate sophistication.
