Private Residence 1902
Fokkema & Partners worked to bring points of interconnection within an existing 100-year-old home, a dwelling highly adaptable to the modern lifestyle in Rotterdam, Netherlands.
To improve its connection to the garden, this home extension joins a former semi-basement storage floor with the generous living spaces on the main floor. The interconnection of spaces has affirmed the flexibility of this 100 year old residence to adapt to the changes in the way we live and work in our own, personal style.
The double story extension has an all glazed facade with slender detailing. Window frames are integrated in the floor, ceiling and walls as much as possible, making the transition from inside to outside very smooth. A void was included to draw in more natural light, making space for a large living kitchen on the lower floor. Construction to carry the weight of the facade above is carefully dimensioned and designed to make sure all lines and corners align perfectly, creating a clear architectural shell.
